The paperback version of Dairmaid McCulloch’s ‘Thomas Cromwell: a Life’ (Allen Lane UK/Viking USA, 2018) was released recently by Penguin in North America (July 2019 in the UK), ISBN 9780143132929. It has been widely praised as the new standard biography for Thomas Cromwell. The American edition is subtitled: ‘A Revolutionaly Life’. This will be a fine addition to your collection of Tudor history literature, along with the suggested additional reading on the pages in this website for Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, including the Yale study of Cromwell by Michael Everett. Cromwell’s success and skill at politics and his subsequent execution is proof enough that in public life no good deed goes unpunished, at least at the hands of a Tudor master. McCulloch is Professor of the History of the Church at the University of Oxford.
