A new biography of John of Gaunt was published in April by Oneworld Publications and written by Helen Carr called ‘The Red Prince: the Life of John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster’. The author is a prominent producer of historical programs for various outlets and the podcast called Hidden Histories. The last serious biography of Gaunt was Anthony Goodman’s 1992 ‘John of Gaunt: the exercise of Princely Power in Fourteenth-Century Europe’. This new work by Helen Carr carries the recommendation of many authors of history books and is a valuable contribution to the literature of the period.
