Wolfson History Prize 2022 Shortlist

The 2002 Wolfson History Prize shortlist has been announced and among all the excellenct half-a-dozen titles is one which will be of direct interest to English Monarchs Series readers: 'Devil-land: England under siege, 1588-1688' by Clare Jackson (University of Cambridge) and published by Allen Lane. These dates need no explanation to readers of this website.
The judges of the prize have been quoted as describing this book as, “A masterpiece that will change our view of the 17th century. Exciting and well-written, it provides fresh insights by looking at England through Eurpopean eyes. The book uses foreign commentary on England and diplomatic dispatches to build a fresh picture of England during the 17th century and the tumultuous events from the reign of Elizabeth to James II.
