This week sees the release of the much-awaited concluding volume of Jonathan Sumption’s epic five-volume work The Hundred Years War. Volume 5, 'Triumph and Illusion' brings the narrative of the conflict between England and France to its conculsion in 1453 and covers the period of Joan of Arc, the Duke of Bedford, and French king Charles VII. Website readers may recall that Charles VII was the subject of the English Monarchs “spinoff” series of one book called The French Monarchs Series (see this link). Sumption's book series started in 1990 and those who commenced collecting with the first hardback release (now a rare and sought-after book, by the way) will be rewarded richly for their patience.
