Revisiting Louis the Lion

Wednesday 29 May 2024

Yale author Catherine Hanley has written a new version of the attempted 1216-1217 invasion of England by the French prince, Louis. Her Yale book, ‘Louis: the French prince who Invaded England’ was published in hardback in 2016 and was never issued in paperback by Yale, making it hard to obtain now close on a decade after its release. New copies of the Yale book are now difficult to obtain and at a premium price when found.

This month Bloomsbury Publishing has released ‘1217: the Battles that Saved England’ which is the same theme as the Yale book but with a different text.  The new Bloomsbury book is a chance for readers to revisit the work of the author in a different volume and by another publisher. The opening passages are available online for a preview, but if this text is an example the new book uses Hanley’s descriptive skills as an author of historical fiction as much as non-fiction writing wearing an historian’s hat. The Yale book was more traditional historical biography; Bloomsbury is better known as a publishing house for general fiction (especially the Harry Potter books) and popular history. From a brief glance at the preview text this new book could be placed in that category.  ISBN 9781472860873
